Bakong and KHQR at R855: Paying with the National QR

Bakong / KHQR text label used on this site for the national QR payment option

Bakong and KHQR are not a bank and not a wallet, which confuses many first-time readers. They are the plumbing underneath: a national payment system and a national QR standard that let one code work with apps from different payment providers. This page explains how that plumbing would carry a deposit to R855 if the cashier offers it, how the payout returns by another route, and why a perfectly valid KHQR code can still be a scam.

Bakong and KHQR in two paragraphs

Bakong is the national interbank payment system of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), launched on 29 October 2020. Accounts in it are kept in riel and in US dollars, and money moves by QR code, by phone number or by picking a saved contact. You will sometimes read that Bakong is a digital currency; that label is disputed, including by the head of the central bank, so it is more accurate to call it what it is — a payment system.

KHQR is the national QR code standard, built on the international EMV format and maintained by the NBC as part of Bakong. Its point is interoperability: one KHQR code can accept payment from different payment providers, so the payer does not need the same app as the payee. For a casino cashier that means a single code on the screen may be payable from more than one of the banking apps on your phone, provided the operator has chosen to offer it.

A KHQR deposit, if the cashier offers one

  1. Log in to R855 on the address you typed yourself and open the deposit tab.
  2. Choose the KHQR or Bakong option if it is on the list, then enter the amount and the currency of your balance.
  3. Scan the code shown on that page with your banking app. On a phone, the page may offer to hand the payment straight to the app instead. Never forward the code into a chat or ask someone else to pay it for you.
  4. Read the payee name, amount and currency on your app's confirmation screen, then approve.
  5. Keep the reference number from your app until the deposit appears on your balance.

How the money comes back

KHQR moves money towards whoever generated the code. It has no reverse gear, so winnings travel by a separate payout route: whatever the withdrawal tab of R855's cashier lists for your account, most often a transfer to a bank account in your own name. Open that tab before your first deposit and confirm a route exists. When you request a payout, the account name must match the casino account, and the request will normally sit in a pending review before it is sent. The timing depends on the operator's approval and the receiving bank, not on the QR standard.

Riel or dollars on a KHQR payment

Because Bakong accounts can be held in riel or dollars, check which currency your app is about to send. If it differs from your R855 balance, a conversion takes place at a rate set by the bank or the payment processor, with a margin inside it. At the unofficial rate of roughly 4,100 riel per dollar, 100,000 riel is a little over 24 dollars before margins — a useful mental check when the confirmation screen shows a number in the other currency.

How fake QR codes are used

The KHQR mark proves only which standard a code follows. It says nothing about whose account the code pays. That gap is what scams exploit. An agent in a Telegram group posts a KHQR image with the caption R855 top-up; the code is genuine, the account behind it belongs to the agent. A fake support page shows a code to pay a verification fee before a withdrawal is released. A forwarded screenshot of a successful KHQR payment is offered as proof that someone sent you money. In every case the defence is the same: pay only codes generated by the cashier on a page you opened, trust only your own app's history, and never pay anything to unlock a withdrawal.

The method list and limits depend on the account — check in R855's cashier. Bakong and KHQR are listed here as options to look for; we have not confirmed that R855 offers them, and minimums, fees and processing times are only those shown in the cashier.

Bakong and KHQR questions

Is Bakong a digital currency?
Describe it as what it is: the national interbank payment system of the National Bank of Cambodia, launched on 29 October 2020. Calling it a digital currency is disputed, including by the central bank itself. Your money stays in riel or US dollars.
Can I scan a KHQR code from any bank app?
That is the idea of the standard: one KHQR accepts payment from different payment providers. Whether R855's cashier shows a KHQR code for your account is a separate question, and only the cashier can answer it.
Is a KHQR code safe just because it carries the KHQR mark?
No. The mark tells you which standard the code uses, not who receives the money. A code printed in a chat, a group or an image someone forwarded can route your payment to any account. Use only a code that the cashier generated on the page you opened yourself.
How do I get money back out if I paid by KHQR?
A QR is for paying. Withdrawals go through whatever the withdrawal tab of the cashier lists for your account, typically a transfer to an account in your name. Check that tab before depositing, so you know the payout route in advance.

Cambodia's Law on the Management of Commercial Gambling does not permit Cambodian citizens to gamble, and the government announced the suspension of all online operations at casinos from the start of October 2026. National payment rails being convenient does not make playing legal for you.
